Summary:Mafic and ultramafic rocks are ubiquitous in the Eeyou Istchee James Bay territory, although their abundance is extremely variable from one area to another. These are relatively common in the Nemiscau area and are interpreted as part of Caumont's mafic and ultramafic intrusive suite. These units in this suite consist of a series of mafic and ultramafic intrusions oriented ENE-WSW within the volcano-sedimentary sequence of the Lac des Montagnes Group along the contact between the Nemiscau subprovince, to the south, and the La Grande, to the north, of the Superior Province. Ongoing work aims to better characterize the ultramafic to mafic intrusions of the Caumont Suite in order to constrain their petrological and geochemical affinities as well as the association between chromiferous and nickeliferous mineralizations observed in many of these intrusions. This new geological information will be critical in a comparative study of the Caumont suite with other intrusions in the Superior Province such as those present in the Ring of Fire area in northern Ontario.
