|Summary:||An environmental assessment was conducted to evaluate the environmental impacts caused by the mining activity carried out in the Santa Lucia-Castellanos ore body located to the northeast of Pinar del Rio, Cuba. The Leopold cause-effect matrix was used to identify and evaluate the impacts, which allowed identifying the action items required to mitigate, follow-up and control the negative impacts caused by this activity on the region. Melanterite and natrojarosite phases are reported for the first time, which contributes to the process of contamination. It was possible to isolate the Thiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria, which contributes to the contamination of the associated ecosystem because of the acid drainage from the mines.|
