Summary:In this paper a mathematical model (MADA) is proposed for the optimal management of aquifer exploitation. This model is based on the inclusion of a simulation model for groundwater flow (AQ@IMPE) using a linear programming algorithm. The theoretical concept behind MADA is described, making a special distinction for the inclusion of AQ@IMPE in the proposed method. Finally, MADA is used to evaluate the exploitation of the South Havana Basin according to a Water Use Plan (WUP), where it is demonstrated that the distribution of the exploitation used in the WUP does not take into account possible saline intrusion into the aquifer; a solution to this effect is provided. Also evaluated is the ability of the aquifer to satisfy demand based on a yearly pattern of 75% probability of rain during a period of five consecutive years with low rainfall.
