Summary:One of the main objectives of soil and rock mechanics is the development of constitutive soil and rock models. The paper at hand gives an overview of recent developments in this field and compares the latter with models currently used in geoengineering practice. Challenges in transferring scientific knowledge in the field of constitutive modelling to engineering practice are identified. Possibilities of dealing with these challenges are finally illustrated by means of dilatancy formulations for cohesionless soils.
